When Helium is cooled to 2 degree above absolute zero, a dramatic transformation takes place. Helium, which usually can be seen as a bubbling, rapidly evaporating substance, becomes stable and starts looking a bit like water. Scientists Create Robotic Fish To Aid In Water Pollution


Robotic fish, developed by UK scientists, are to be released into the sea for the first time to detect pollution.

This robotic fish is about 1.5 meters (1.6 yards) long, will be released in the port of Gijón in Asturias, Spain. If the project is a succes and the fish detects contaminated waters, it will then be used in rivers, lakes and seas all over the world.

The robotic fish looks like a normal carp and swims like one, but is much more expensive. This roughly $29,000 fish swims at a speed of about one meter per second. It contains chemical sensors which aid in finding dangerous pollutants such as leakage from boats or underwater pipelines. If the fish finds traces of contamination, it then sends the information wirelessly back to the control center.

This fish lasts about eight hours before it swims itself to a charging hub to refresh.


“While using shoals of robotic fish for pollution detection in harbours might appear like something straight out of science fiction, there are very practical reasons for choosing this form. In using robotic fish we are building on a design created by hundreds of millions of years' worth of evolution, which is incredibly energy efficient. This efficiency is something we need to ensure that our pollution detection sensors can navigate in the underwater environment for hours on end,” says Rory Doyle, senior research scientist at BMT Group.

The robots, designed and being built by professor Huosheng Hu and his team at the University of Essex, U.K., aren’t able to be caught in nets easily and will most likely not be mistaken for prey, since predators usually stay clear of fake fish.

Hu and his team plan to build five fish and hope to release them into the sea by the end of next year.

Tesla Model S Sedan Concept: First Official Pictures!


The Model S is being designed as a high performance electric sedan, competing with such cars as the BMW 5-series. This is primarily in order to justify the high costs of high density lithium ion batteries. This business model follows that of the the high performance Tesla Roadster sports car, which has a base price of $109,000 USD / € 99,000.


Initial pricing is estimated at $57,400 for the standard model with a 150 mi (240 km) range or $65,000 for a premium model with greater performance and a 300 mi (480 km) range.[5][6] The company also announced plans to rent or lease high capacity battery packs which offer a 300-mile range.Profits from the Model S are expected to fund development of a more affordable third vehicle codenamed "BlueStar".


The chassis, body, motor and energy storage system will likely be unique to Tesla Motors.

Construction of the assembly factory in Albuquerque, New Mexico (a central location for shipping) was supposed to begin in April 2007, but was canceled and production moved to San Jose, California.

On the 12th of February 2009 Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, officially stated in the Tesla Motors Blog that the prototype car will be revealed March 26th, 2009 at SpaceX in Hawthorne, California.

On February 1, 2008 it was reported that Tesla Motors was planning to offer a range-extended version of its Model S. This version would include a gasoline engine whose purpose is to extend the driving range of the vehicle. Those plans have been scrapped. Speaking at the GoingGreen conference on September 18, 2008, Musk officially said that Tesla was only pursuing all-electric cars and not hybrids.

Ice that burns could be a green fossil fuel

Natural gas locked up in water crystals could be a source of enormous amounts of energy – and if a new technology delivers what scientists are claiming, then it could even be emissions-free too.

For a normal eye, clathrate hydrate looks like regular ice. However, while it is made up partly of water, the water molecules are organised into "cages", which trap individual molecules of methane inside them.

If we compare this to other fossil fuels, methane – also known as natural gas – releases less carbon dioxide per unit of energy generated. But burning it still releases carbon dioxide and thus drives climate change.

However, according to research presented this week at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society, a new method of extracting the methane could effectively make it a carbon-neutral fossil fuel.

Croatian scientist discovers protein that cleans cells


Djikic, a professor at the Institute for Biochemistry at Goethe University and CEF (Cluster of Excellence Frankfurt) Institute has presented his latest discovery of a mechanism that mammals’ cells use for disposal of malign substances. He believes the discovery could be used to create more- successful medications.

The scientist identified proteins that take part in the process of cells’ removal of substances linked to tumours and neuro-degenerative diseases.

That mechanism has been known to scientists for a long time, but Djikic discovered receptors that make the process selective.

An article about this breakthrough discovery has been published in the well-known science magazine "Molecular Cell."

Enzyme behind cancer spread found


Scientists say they have identified an enzyme that helps cancer spread around the body.

Cancer metastasis is responsible for 90% of cancer-related deaths.

Why?
Metastasis means the spread of cancer. Cancer cells can break away from a primary tumor and enter the bloodstream or lymphatic system (the system that produces, stores, and carries the cells that fight infections). That is how cancer cells spread to other parts of the body.

Institute of Cancer Research scientists have found that an enzyme called LOX is crucial in promoting metastasis, Cancer Cell journal reports.

"This new discovery provides real hope that we can develop a drug which will fight the spreading of cancer." said Lead researcher Dr Janine Erler.

The scientists hope that drugs to block this enzyme's action will stop the spread of cancer. They studied breast cancer in mice, and hope that their findings will apply to humans with other types of cancer.

LOX (lysyl oxidase) works by sending out signals to prepare a new area of the body for the cancer to set up a camp. Without LOX, the new environment would be too hostile for the cancer to grow.

Lead researcher Dr Janine Erler described the discovery as "the crucial missing piece in the jigsaw that scientists have been searching for."

This is the first time one key enzyme has been identified as responsible for effectively allowing the cancer to spread.

"If we can interrupt the body's ability to prepare new locations for the cancer to spread to, we can effectively prevent cancer metastasis.

"Cancer metastasis is very difficult to treat and this new discovery provides real hope that we can develop a drug which will fight the spreading of cancer," she said.

Dr Julie Sharp, Cancer Research UK's science information manager, said: "A better understanding of how cancer spreads is crucial to improving the treatment of the disease. This research takes scientists a step closer to understanding this major problem - the next stage will be to find out if the LOX protein can be switched off to stop cancer spreading."

Girl of 10 eats food for the first time

Tia-Mae McCarthy received all her vital nutrients through a tube for the last ten years..

Starting from a few tentative spoonfuls of yoghurt, she has now progressed to Angel Delight, mousse, ice cream, tomato soup, custard and semolina.

Her mother said she is delighted with her progress.

"It's lovely to see her eating," she said. "We can go out for dinner now. I take a little pot of soup for her and she sits and eats with us. Then for pudding, she chooses ice cream or custard.

"I can't believe that just before Christmas, all she was eating was a few mouthfuls of yoghurt and now we have got this long list of things that she will sit down and happily eat. I never thought it would happen."

The girl was born three months prematurely with a large gap between her oesophagus and her stomach. She spent first part of her life in hospital. Surgery corrected her medical problems and there was no physical reason why she couldn't eat or drink. In a desperate quest to find a cure for her daughter, Sue took Tia to an Austrian clinic. There, Tia was starved for three whole weeks but it had little effect, except to leave her painfully thin and ill.

After that experience, on a trip to Spain, Tia suddenly started to show an interest in trying things. Sue tried giving her yoghurt, and amazingly, she accepted it. On their return to England, they saw a specialist in Birmingham, who told Sue to carry on offering Tia small amounts of food and gradually introduce new flavours.

Tia's menu now consists of two pots of yoghurt for breakfast, half a can of soup for lunch, followed by custard or ice cream and the same again for dinner. Sue is hoping that rice pudding will be Tia's next new experience but admits she is concerned about how she progresses to lumpier food.

"I keep thinking of her future, when she's out and about, meeting friends, going to the pictures - normal stuff that children do.

"I don't want her to miss out on all that. I think it bothers me than it bothers her."

Tia still does not relish the experience of eating and is still having nutrients and calories pumped directly into her stomach at night but her mother hopes is that eventually she will become less reliant on a drip.

"The specialist in Birmingham has been my light at the end of the tunnel," Ms McCarthy said.

"Because no-one knew what was wrong with Tia, they didn't know how to help us. I was left on my own, with no idea what to do. "We've now got little steps that are achievable and we feel much more positive about everything."

It is said that sometimes fiction is stranger than life. This is one of those cases, because this robot will convince you that real life is in most cases the strangest of all. We humans are not immortal, so it’s important that we - or our memories live on somehow after our bodies turn to worm food.

Oboe is a robot made with sole purpose of carrying human thoughts through time. The Oboe was designed by Arnaud Deloustal as a robot that would ‘hang-out’ with the elderly and carry memories of them. Oboe would store within it all the information that is to be gained about the certain individual. This way as much of their “essence” as possible will live on. You can see how the future might play out with “Oboe”. We continue to live, in a sense, in robot form.


Oboe is designed so that memories of an individual live on long after the person is gone. This is not really a case of artificial intelligence and although it seems so strange. Humans are designing robots to live with the elderly and gain insight about them instead of spending some time with their loved ones themselves.

'Eco-Friendly' Florida Mansion

Have you heard about the 'Eco-Friendly' Florida Mansion? Well, a local developer wants $29 million dollars for this 15,000 square-foot mansion that was built using Ecological methods. Everything is Eco-friendly, the design is luxurious, agreeable and fashionable, combining every single detail into a splendorous vacation resort.  




Frank McKinney is a developer in Florida, and he likes to engage into large projects, just like this one. He has built what he calls an "Eco-mansion" at 620 South Ocean Boulevard on Manalapan Beach in Florida. If you find yourself in the area, you can go for a visit.


The 15,000-square-foot mansion is placed on 1.6 acres of land and it's probably inspired by architecture found in Tahiti, Fiji, Bali and Hawaii. Although most posts on the Internet refer to it as "Eco-Friendly Florida Mansion",  Mr. McKinney named it "Acqua Liana," which is the Tahitian word for "water flower".



The mansion was build using special renewable materials like bamboo, teak, coconut and palm wood. According to Mr. McKinney, the total amount of reclaimed wood used in this Eco-mansion saved more than 105 acres of rain forest.


The Eco-house has energy-efficient light fixtures, solar panels and a grass driveway. It also uses fly ash and a product from coal-fired power plants found in the concrete walls and foundation.



The Eco-Mansion has seven bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, two elevators, two laundry rooms, and a movie theater, pictured in the following image.



One room in this house has an astonishing floor, made from bubbling water, glass and glowing LED lights. When you step on the floor, you feel like stepping into the world of "Pandora" from Avatar.


The house includes a 2,000-gallon saltwater aquarium above the wet bar that will bring a glimpse of life into the room.

Mars discovery suggests water on planet 1m years ago


The latest discovery increases the chances of life existing on the planet in the recent past, or even surviving today. That can be scarry at some level. Scientists have identified the gullies inside a crater that appear to be not more than 1.25 million years old.

The theory is that the channels must have been sculpted by surface water from melting ice. There is evidence of water-borne sediments being carried down from high ground and deposited in low-lying alluvial fans. The gully system is in Promethal Terra, an area of cratered highlands south of the Martian equator.

Professor James Head, from Brown University in Rhode Island, USA, was in the team that reported the discovery in the journal Geology. He said: "We think there was recent water on Mars. This is a big step in the direction to proving that."

The best theory for the gullies is melting snow and ice rather than groundwater bubbling up to the surface. This lobe it's probable to be about the same age. The other three lobes were unblemished and therefore had to be younger, said the scientists.

As a final conclusion, experts think the planet was occasionally wet for far longer than was initially believed.

Yeti Could Exist, Respected Expert Says


In a BBC TV interview, Britain's Sir David Attenborough said he is "absolutely baffled" by footprints that may have been left by such a creature. This coould mean that yet, or abominable snowman, could exist.

"Very, very convincing footprints have been found," at 19,000-foot elevations, he said. "Nobody goes up to 19,000 feet just to make a joke."

When asked about the Loch Ness Monster, Attenborough answered with skepticism. He argued that there would have to be more than one, and that they would likely need to come up for air and expose themselves.

Attenborough, 82, is known for his coverage of animals and nature for the BBC.
