Breakthrough: Leukemia Cured with HIV virus

Image
The world of medicine witnessed a new medical breakthrough: a 7 year old girl was miraculously healed from a serious form of leukemia with a disabled form of HIV. Emma Whitehead was diagnosed with acute form leukemia and she underwent every conventional treatment for long two years. The parents were really desperate at that point, so they agreed to enroll their daughter into an experimental program.  Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania have perfected a treatment that will reprogram the immune system, so it will destroy every cancer cell in the body. The treatment is extremely hard, and it almost killed the little girl. But, miraculously, she resisted to the harsh cure. Moreover, her aggressive form of leukemia was cured. 7 months after that treatment phase passed and Emma's condition is still in remission. She was not the only girl who tried this, and the experimental treatment showed amazing results in more adults. The scientists who developed this treatmen...

Cutting-edge endeavor to block HIV: Stronger vaginal gels

Image
After many efforts to produce vaginal creams that can stop HIV the scientists are finally testing if a medicament practiced to treat HIV contagion at last could give women a tool to prevent it -- by impregnating the medicine into vaginal gels and contraceptive-style rings. Addressed microbicides, this sort of woman-controlled protection is believed to be the key for combating the HIV plaguey -- particularly in evolving nations where the virus crushes its worst and adult female too frequently can not convince their sexual partners to utilise a rubber. "Frankly, blocking transmission of the virus appears to be a lot harder than anyone understood it would be at the beginning," alleges meeting co-chair Dr. Sharon Hillier of the University of Pittsburgh and a PI of the Microbicide Trials Network. "The reason we're not depressed in the microbicide world? We actually have learned a lot and moved on to think about potent drugs and really cool delivery methods." ...

Injectable bone powder

Image
Researchers from RegenTec - UK based research and Pharma company has discovered something you might call magic powder. This powder acts like sealing agent between fractured and broken bone pieces. This powder which needs to be injected into the patients bone fills the void created by fracture or broken bone. This will speed the recovery process. It is just like a quick fix.  “You won’t be able to just walk out of a hospital with a broken leg,” said Robin Quirk, a professor at the University of Nottingham who, along with Kevin Shakesheff in the United States, originally developed the technology. “What we are trying to do in the short term is have something that fills the void left by a break that acts like normal spongy bone and encourages natural regeneration.” The powder is not replacement for the bone itself, rather it gives stability and aids bone growth.  Read full article here
